How to save a downloaded video to iPhone Photos

Move a video from the Files app into your iPhone Photos library so it shows up with your camera roll.

Updated

When you download a video in Safari on iPhone, it goes to the Files app, not Photos. That's normal. Moving it into Photos takes four taps, and then it sits in your camera roll like any video you filmed.

Move a video from Files to Photos

  1. Open the Files app. Tap Browse at the bottom, then Downloads. (If you don't see it, look in iCloud Drive, then Downloads.)
  2. Tap the video to open it.
  3. Tap the Share button, the square with an arrow pointing up, in the bottom-left corner.
  4. Tap Save Video.

Open Photos and you'll find it under Recents.

Faster: straight from Safari

Right after downloading, tap the blue arrow at the end of Safari's address bar, then tap the file. It opens in a preview. Tap Share, then Save Video. Same result, without opening Files.

Save Video isn't in the menu

Photos only accepts video formats the iPhone can play natively, which means MP4 and MOV. If you downloaded an MKV or WebM, the option won't appear. Go back to the downloader, paste the link again, and choose MP4. See which video format to choose.

Change where Safari saves downloads

Go to Settings, then Apps, then Safari, then Downloads. You can pick On My iPhone so files don't fill your iCloud storage.

Save several at once

In Files, tap the three dots at the top right, then Select. Pick the videos, tap Share, then Save Videos (or Save Items).

Audio files

MP3 and M4A files can't go into Photos, because Photos only holds pictures and videos. Keep them in Files, or open them in a music or podcast app that accepts files.

Clean up afterwards

Once a video is in Photos, the copy in Files is a duplicate. Delete it from Downloads to free up space.
