Why is my downloaded video blurry?
Reasons a downloaded video looks soft or pixelated, and how to get the sharpest copy the source has.
A downloaded video that looks soft or blocky is frustrating, especially when it looked fine in the app. Here's why it happens and what you can do about it.
The source was low resolution
A download can only be as sharp as the copy the site has. If someone uploaded in 480p, or the video is ten years old, that's what exists. We always take the best version available, up to 1080p Full HD. To check, open the original and look at its quality settings. On YouTube, tap the gear icon and look at the highest number listed.
The platform compressed it
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok squeeze videos hard to save bandwidth. Fast motion, confetti, water and dark scenes suffer most and turn blocky. That damage happens when the platform processes the upload, so it's baked into every copy, ours included.
It looks fine on the phone, bad on the TV
A 720p clip looks sharp on a 6-inch screen and soft on a 55-inch TV. Nothing's wrong with the file. You're just seeing it bigger.
Your app re-compressed it
Sending a video through WhatsApp, Messenger or email often shrinks it. So does uploading it somewhere else. If you need to share a sharp copy, send the file through a cloud drive link, or use the app's option to send as a document.
The player is scaling it badly
Some players stretch a small video to fill the screen with a cheap scaling method. VLC or the default player on your device usually does a better job.
What helps
- Check the original's best quality and compare.
- Choose MP4, MOV or MKV for the video. They all hold the same picture, so the choice won't affect sharpness. See which video format to choose.
- For your own videos, upload in the highest quality you can, and download from the platform where you posted it at the best quality.
Can AI upscaling fix it?
Upscaling tools can make a soft video look a bit cleaner, but they guess at detail rather than recover it. We don't upscale. You get the platform's best copy as it is.
If it's the sound that's wrong rather than the picture, see video has no sound.
Quick answers
Should I pick a higher resolution?
We already take the highest one available, up to 1080p. There's no lower or higher setting to choose.
